Sponge Docks The tourist industry blossomed here with the sponge industry as visitors came to the city to see the sponge divers and find souvenirs. Some of the original shops and restaurants remain at the docks today, owned by the same families that started them in the 1920’s. Here in the heart of Greek culture and tradition, today’s visitor can shop, eat, take cruises down the Anclote River to the Gulf of Mexico, go deep sea fishing, visit the salt-water aquarium, see a movie depicting the sponge industry, and watch a sponge diving exhibition.
