Many
vintage postcards date from a time when few people had cameras, and those who
did had to settle for pictures that were far below the quality that commercial
printers could produce. Thus postcards give us some of the clearest, most
detailed images of the way Tarpon Springs appeared years ago. The postcard
originated in Austria in 1869 when the nation's postal system sold small blank
cards with the necessary postage printed on them. The United States post office
borrowed the idea in 1873, and eventually commercial printers saw the
possibilities of adapting the concept by adding a picture to the face of the
card and offering it for sale at a nominal price.
